LinkedIn offers many opportunities for students to enhance their intership and job search. LinkedIn Jobs lists internship opportunities worldwide. LinkedIn Groups and Contacts are opportunites for students to network and develop professional contacts with people with similar career goals and interests.

To enhance LinkedIn networking opportunities students must create a detailed professional LinkedIn Profile that contains the following:

Professional/Business Photo, different from a Facebook “personality” photo

Current resume

Professional objective: a work internship

Work, internship and volunteer experience

School courses relevant to your career goals

Social and professional interests, affiliations and rewards

Skills and personal interests such as: 6 years French and enjoys European travel

Sample College Student Profile Summary:

sophomore, medical science major from Stanford University seeking summer 2013 internship opportunity in a healthcare environment in the Los Angeles area

Note: Separate your LinkedIn Profile from your Personal Facebook Page and from your Twitter activities designed for your friends, followers and fans. Just because you have a Twitter account doesn’t mean you have to advertise it on LinkedIn. Beware of flashback from comments on political, social and religious Socail Media commentary.

tip: Need more help with your LinkedIn profile? LinkedIn offers free, monthly webinars on everything from developing your profile to LI job searches to joining and starting LI Groups.

From the desk of the SVP Human Resources

Career development has become a complicated process of our professional life in the 21st Century. For Millennials this decade has demanded creativity, perseverance, and willingness to own and guide your own career. Facing difficult economic conditions the Millennials are faced with a lack of first time job opportunities as they graduate from universities across the United States. Securing internships has become an art form and the techniques to achieve success have become a science in terms of the processes, procedures and methodologies at your disposal.

This book, Find Your Intern Impact Zone: What Employers Want You To Know, was written as a roadmap to internship achievement. The tools and techniques offered have been designed and offered in a simple format enabling readers to create opportunities for immediate internship success. More importantly, the tools and advice given in this book come from the perspective and voice of companies that hire these interns each day. Companies try to live with and try to understand academic and governmental rules and regulations and often what is considered non-valued-added bureaucracy. Companies believe in the internships. But they also believe your success as an intern begins with your ownership of a search process, your desire to achieve career goals you have set for yourself and willingness to listen to a voice coming from the corporate perspective. Finding your ideal internship is a lengthy process, demanding hard work and follow up. It demands that you understand that you will most likely have frustration before you achieve ultimate success. However, your ultimate success in finding the ideal internship will be a rewarding experience.

Yesterday LinkedIn listed 3,587 internship opportunities worldwide.

LinkedIn has been greatly expanding its Job Search function, and along with that, it’s Internship search function. Just this week, LinkedIn added new features to make your job search easier.

I have career coached many college students who are searching for internships: and I realized that not only do college students not realize LinkedIn has internship job listings, their parents don’t realize it either!

Finding an intership can be challenging and frustrating, but getting the right internship is a jump-start to achieving your long-term career goals. Not only is an internship a way to test-run your career goals, but an internship teaches you valuable lessons on working in a professional environment including:

learn new skills that supplement your previous skill set

practice new skills in a safe environment where success and failure are viewed as learning opportunities

opportunity to demonstrate potential

basic office structure such as arriving at work on time, appropriate attire, getting along with co-workers

Next week, I’ll share some tips for college students searching for internships on how to develop a LinkedIn profile that will make employers take you seriously.

Change is good in an organization: it keeps the organization vital, current, evolving and always striving for continuous improvement. But the fact is most of us don’t like change.

The headlines this week on Marissa Mayer’s decision at Yahoo to bring all home-based workers back in-house highlighted the fact that while many Yahoo employees, commentators, and the general public have strong opinions about whether this is an archaic decison, discriminatory against women, or a set-back to employee rights, a few facts appear in agreement:

Yahoo is struggling, losing share and money, and must make big changes to remain competitive, in fact, just to stay in business

As the CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer is charged with implementing changes to make Yahoo competitive and to earn revenue for shareholders

The 1st 6 months of her tenure, Mayer has increased profitability and shareholder value through changes she has already make

So what is the problem? Is the issue that, at her own expense, she built a nursery in her office so she can work long hours to turn Yahoo around? Is the issue that some people are not carrying their workload, and will be exposed and possibly terminated when their performance is under daily scrutiny? Is it a Mommy Wars issue that Mayer is not putting the needs of working mothers ahead of the company’s needs? – I personally have not seen stats indicating that most of these remote workers are working moms of young children – they may be, but they many not. Working from home is not a right, it is a best practice for an organization but it may not be a best practice for all organizations. Leaders have to make the tough decisions balancing the Essential Exceptional and Ethical issues of the company.

It’s lonely at the top.

The buck stops here.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

As in most cases, management made a decision and HR issued the employee policy change memo that started the national debate on what are employee rights verses employee privileges verses corporate governance and responsibility. Could the change have been communicated and managed differently? Probably; but probably not with less controversy and debate. Managing change is always full of stress and anxiety: regardless of how it’s communicated. Even generally agreed good change causes anxiety.

Only time will prove whether Mayer is right or wrong in her leadership at Yahoo. But time has already proven that making the hard decisions comes with the job, and that being a leader is not a popularity contest. Leadership takes integrity and the willingness to have courage to make the tough decisions. Its a balance of how to engage, empower and inspire the workforce. Its an effort in our ability to communicate until it hurts and then Find the Impact Zone, the balance between the tough decisions, the popular decisions, the decisions that drive highest level of performance for the entire organization.

One thing I truly believe is that Yahoo believes in a flexible work environment. They are one of the pioneers. But pioneers also continuously assess where they are and where they need to be. This will be interesting for all of us to watch develop.

I also like the The Job interview tips throughout the show: such as grooming counts: make a good 1st impression! I don’t agree with everything of course, one of their interview tips is a resume should never be longer than 1 page. While I agree brevity has its benefits, your resume needs to be long enough to tell your story, and as a 25+ year HR professional, many resumes I consider – mine included – are over 1 page because they need to be!

The Job is good for anyone applying for a job or internship, or for professional recruiters: learn by watching, and learn by others’ mistakes: and good interview skills take time and practice to develop.

Did you watch The Job last week? Are you watching this week? If not, set your DVR: it’s a good lesson and an interesting show. The Job is on Fridays, 8pm EST on CBS.
